Director Shoojit Sircar, who recently announced his next film, I Want to Talk, with Abhishek Bachchan, opened up on trying to make a film about legendary Indian singer Kishore Kumar. In an interview recently, he revealed that he had worked on a script and was keen on making the film, but then he got to know about the biopic that director Anurag Basu is making, and he decided to back out.
Sircar, while speaking to Scroll, shared that he researched the Kishore Kumar film for over four years, but didn’t want to take it further when the reports of Basu working on the same subject went viral. “I had been working on a script on the life of Kishore Kumar. I did almost three to four years of research with the family, but there were a couple of other scripts being worked on at the same time, including by Anurag Basu,” he said.
The popular director added that it is difficult for him to go back to something after deciding to move on. “I had developed a draft, but when I learnt about Anurag, I didn’t think there was any point in two people doing the same thing. So that went on ice. Once you lose the momentum, it’s a big challenge to go back to it,” he continued.
Sircar is known for his poignant movies like Yahaan (2005), Piku (2015), Madras Cafe (2013), and Sardar Udham (2021), among others.
There are strong rumours in the industry about actor Aamir Khan teaming up with Anurag Basu for the Kishore Kumar biopic. It is believed that Basu and producer Bhushan Kumar will be taking the film on the floor soon and Aamir liked the idea that the director had decided to explore in the film.
A report in Pinkvilla had earlier quoted a source close to the production as saying, “The Kishore Kumar biopic is a subject close to the heart of Anurag Basu and Bhushan Kumar. Aamir is also a big admirer of Kishore Kumar and loved the vision that Basu has. The filmmaker has treated it very differently, and that’s what has fascinated Aamir the most.”
The Kishore Kumar biopic has been in the works for a long time now. However, nothing has been officially announced yet. Aamir, meanwhile, is busy with Sitaare Zameen Par, and is rumoured to be converting Ghajini into a franchise with producer Allu Aravind.
